From Australia to London

A Case Study by Global Pathways Recruitment

We caught up with a professional from Australia who we helped move to London, to get their thoughts on their relocation experience.

Why did you decide you wanted to move abroad?

I’d always wanted to move abroad – it was just a matter of when, not if.

I love Australia, and will most likely return there someday, but wanted to spend a few years (at least) experiencing life somewhere new.

How did you find the relocation process?

My recruiter was amazing. He was the one championing the whole thing.

He was aware of the pressure of moving your life to the other side of the world, and guided me through. He even met me on my first day in London to make sure I was alright, and showed me where to get nice Indian food. I truly believe that this move only happened successfully because of him.

How were the first 3 months in your new home?

Challenging at first. It’s a big change; moving from the other side of the world, opening bank accounts, getting a property, starting a new job, meeting new people, working out how the tube system works.

But it was also exciting, and rewarding when I worked each of the above out.

How has the international experience benefited you, personally and professionally?

It’s been really interesting to bring my experience and ideas from one part of the world, and share them with my colleagues. Similarly, I’ve learnt a lot from their experiences and ideas. Professionally, I would say that it’s made me more confident. Personally, I’ve met lots of great people that I wouldn’t have otherwise met.

Would you recommend an international move to other professionals? Why?

Absolutely.

Why wouldn’t you want to experience life in a new location?  Home will always be there – why not spend a few years somewhere else? Also, it’s a great way to see the world.
