Thailand is introducing a smoking ban on up to 20 popular beaches across the country. The ban will be implemented next month, effecting 20 beaches in the provinces of Phuket, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chon Buri and Songkhla, and will be adopted across all beaches in Thailand if it is successful.

The ban is being enforced to put an end to the large amounts of cigarette butts thrown into the sand and sea, which make up approximately a third of the waste collected by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources.

Individuals who are caught violating the new law will face up to a year in prison or a fine of up to 100,00 baht (£2,280, $3,000).
